SICILY. Messana. 338-318 BC. Dilitron (Bronze, 25 mm, 15.78 g, 3 h). [ΠOΣ]EIΔAN Laureate head of Poseidon to left; behind, dolphin. Rev. MEΣΣANIΩN Ornate trident head; dolphins downward at sides. Caltabiano 740. CNS 13. SNG ANS 391. An attractive exampe with a magnificent lime green patina. Minor dark spots from removed encrustations, otherwise, very fine.

This is certainly one of the finest and most elaborate renderings of Poseidon in Greek numismatics. His head shows a serenity that is both noble and majestic, while the reverse, with an ornate trident and two dolphins, reminds the viewer of the awe-inspiring might of the sea god.
